AIIM RESEARCH FACILITY

Full time, fixed term appointment (2 years)
The Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM) at the University of Wollongong is one of the world leading materials research groups conducting its research in a wide range of research fields, including superconductors, spintronic and electronic materials, energy materials and management systems, thin film technology, and nano-/bio- materials. ISEM is housed within the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM) which provides outstanding world extensive research infrastructure environment. ISEM has been successful in obtaining a large number of competitive research grants through ARC and other funding agencies. It hosts more than 120 PhD students and staff members and has close to 40 specialist laboratories. Currently ISEM is rapidly expanding its research portfolio into novel quantum materials and quantum effects which has been facilitated by installation of several state-of-the-art instruments.

This position has been created to meet the urgent need to perform high-quality research on novel topological and Dirac type electronic at the Wollongong Node of Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Future Low Energy Electronics Technologies (FLEET), hosted by Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM) within the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM). The project is funded as part of the ARC CoE in FLEET (www.fleet.org).

The successful candidate will be responsible for synthesising and characterising high-quality materials in the family of topological insulators, Weyl metals and Dirac-semimetals. The appointee will have a strong background in materials synthesis using techniques such as single crystal growth, pulsed laser deposition, molecular beam epitaxy or CVD method to produce bulk single crystals, films or 2D materials. Characterization will be performed using quantum magnetotransport, photoelectric effects via optical spectroscopy and electron microscopy. An advanced understanding of condensed matter physics is required as the role will involve navigating the fields of magnetism and electronic structure.
The position will be critical in providing high-quality postgraduate research training, preparation and dissemination of research findings through journal articles and participation at conferences. Complementary knowledge of computational techniques including density functional theory and dynamic mean field theory will be highly regarded.
